Conversation notes

How to remember conversations with notes organized by person

A practical way to capture a conversation, keep a promise and recall the right context before meeting again. Start with one person and one useful note.

Keep the context you want to return to

After meeting several people, it is easy to mix up an update, a preference or a promise you made. A useful conversation note does not have to be a transcript. It can be one detail that helps you pick up the conversation next time.

Choose the person first, then write the detail. Keeping notes around a person makes it easier to return to their story without searching through unrelated journal entries.

Three useful things to capture

You do not need to fill out a long form. Start with whichever of these matters to this conversation.

  • Something new: an update, interest or preference you want to remember
  • Something you promised: a call, a resource or help you offered
  • Something to ask next time: a check-in after an important event

Connect time-sensitive notes to a reminder

A favorite food can stay as a memory point. A call next week needs a date. Separating lasting details from time-sensitive follow-ups helps you keep the note simple while still remembering to act.

In a person-centered app, you can revisit the notes and plans connected to someone in the same place. Check your phone’s notification permissions if you want a reminder at a particular time.

Review two things before your next meeting

Take a look at your last conversation and any promise you have not followed up on. You do not have to read every old entry or follow a script. Use the note to be present in the conversation happening now.

For a coworker, that might mean asking about the schedule change they mentioned. For a friend, it might be a check-in after a move or their first week at a new job.

Start small and keep only what is useful

Saram Note lets you add a person, capture a quick note and return to their timeline before meeting again. Begin with someone you see regularly and one short note.

Separate what someone told you from assumptions, and avoid recording unnecessary sensitive details. If you want to keep local records when you change phones, make an encrypted backup first.
